For fifteen years, I brought Western art into Korean homes.

Since 2010, I imported prints by European and American artists — watching them settle onto walls in living rooms and cafés across the country. There was pride in that work. Western art had long been received here as something aspirational, and I had helped carry it in.

But the longer I did it, the more I noticed who was being left out. The Korean artists around me were making something genuinely their own — work shaped by a lifetime of absorbing both East and West, holding the two in a single frame. Seen from the world, their voices were singular. Yet opportunity reached only a few, and many were left outside it.

So we returned to something simple: what you place where you'll see it every day should be beautiful, and invite you to think. ohwon exists to carry that work — contemporary Korean art, Korean at heart and shaped by the world — outward, to rooms far beyond where it began.

ohwon (오원) means "my garden." We borrowed the name from a 19th-century master who rose from humble beginnings to master his art on his own terms. It carries a quiet conviction: that remarkable work can come from unexpected places, and deserves to be seen far beyond where it began.

Korea's artists grew up folding Western influence into what was already theirs, until the two became inseparable in the work they make. Shaped by a place that prizes relentless refinement, their voices are singular. We chose eight of them — each rooted in Korean painting, each with a sensibility entirely their own.
